Huskie football

BlogParty spent a lovely, sunny late-summer afternoon at Huskie stadium watching OPRF take on Hinsdale Central. Or rather, be taken out by Hinsdale Central. Left in the middle of the fourth quarter with the Huskies facing an insurmountable deficit on the scoreboard.

BlogParty's kids are past high school age, but we still find excuses to go to the games. Today's was that daughters of friends are on the cheerleading squad. But actually, no excuse needed. High school football on a beautiful day in our village is a great way to follow up a mid-morning trip to the farmer's market.

Next year, we'll be heading over to the stadium on Friday nights, where even bigger crowds (presumably) will gather to watch the Huskies tackle usually much larger teams in the West Suburban Silver conference.

We think Friday night lights will be great for generating community spirit and greater enthusiasm for the football team. We understand Friday nights might be a pain in the butt for residents along the west side of the athletic complex, but if ever there were a case where community good trumps neighborhood opposition, this is it.

What do you think about Friday night lights at Huskie Stadium?

And welcome to BlogParty. This is our first post.

Light the way.

One of the reason that many of us live in Oak Park is because we have great schools and faciltities as well as excellent programs for our children. But, our school and club sponsored sports programs have one major deficiency.

Unlike the farther western subburbs, Oak Park is seriously land-locked with little space for expansion of atheletic fields. A case for support is best articulated at this site http://www.oprflights.com/

Check it out. Here's a taste...

"With no ability to increase the number of playing and practice fields available to the school, the lack of stadium lights leaves our sports teams at a disadvantage. Stadium lights are the only way to increase practice space and reduce practice travel expenses. And stadium lights allow for Friday night football, which is the only way to increase football prep time between a home game one week and an away game the next week.

Stadium lights for Friday night football games also free up Saturday afternoons for interscholastic competition
for OPRF’s growing and talented marching band. The band currently is forced to turn down many opportunities to showcase their talents because of Saturday afternoon Football.

Lighting the stadium would both increase practice for the high school by using the stadium for more hours."
